Biosphere Responsible Tourism destination
The city of Barcelona is a compact space that invites you to discover it by walking. With more than 240,000 trees lining the streets and avenues and a number of parks, there will be no shortage of greenery on your walks. And if you prefer the color blue, the Mediterranean Sea fills the city with light from its almost five kilometers of beaches.
Transformations are ongoing: Barcelona's urban layout is constantly being reinvented to reverse the impact on the environment. It is about ensuring a more equitable distribution of space for the different modes of transport, so every day there are more cycle lanes and improvements to the urban bus network. In addition, pedestrians are given priority, so sidewalks are being widened and more and more traffic-pacification schemes are being planned to ensure they can move around safely and conveniently.
These continued efforts have made Barcelona the first city in the world to be certified as a Biosphere Responsible Tourism destination, granted in 2011. Since then, numerous companies have aligned themselves with the Barcelona Biosphere Commitment to Sustainable Tourism, a commitment that promotes respect for the environmental, social, economic and cultural dimensions of a destination.
